Before Detroit Tigers fans nicknamed their affable, power-hitting first baseman “Big Daddy,’ fans of the Hanshin Tigers nicknamed him “Wild Bear” for many of the same reasons.
Cecil Fielder was drafted by the Blue Jays and made his big league debut in 1985 at just 21 years old. However, he was stuck behind two stalwarts at first base in Toronto, so he left for Japan in 1989. His lone NPB season made him an all-time legend to the Koshien faithful – he hit .302 with 38 home runs and 81 RBI in just 106 games.
That monster season led to Fielder signing with a new Tigers team in the American League, where he became an instant sensation. Fielder garnered MVP votes his first four years in Detroit, including finishing second in 1990 and 1991 (when he led the league in homers with 51 and 44, respectively). The three-time All-Star helped the Yankees to the 1996 World Series title and, combined with his son Prince, is part of the only father-son duo to both have MLB seasons with 50 home runs.
