During his career in Nippon Professional Baseball, which concluded in 2000 when he departed for the Seattle Mariners, Kazuhiro Sasaki was one of the most dominant pitchers in Japan. As a member of the Yokohama BayStars, he was the league’s best closer. He earned the 1998 Central League MVP award, led his team to a Japan Series title, and recorded 381 combined saves between Japan and the majors. He is one of the rare players who truly embodied his fitting nickname – “Daimajin” (Daimajin, or “Giant Stone God,” is the giant stone guardian deity from a classic 1966 Japanese tokusatsu film series, and Sasaki earned the nickname for his stone-faced, intimidating glare on the mound.
