Koji Uehara 2000 Upper Deck Ovation Yomiuri Giants Trading Card

$4.99

This set made by Upper Deck, called “Ovation” is one of my favorites because it features materials that make the card feel like it is made out of a real baseball’s leather and seams. This card was produced after Uehara absolutely burst onto the NPB scene as a rookie for the Yomiuri Giants in 1999. His rookie season was unlike anything modern baseball had seen: 15 consecutive wins (breaking the all-time rookie record,) Rookie of the Year award, Eiji Sawamura Award (for best pitcher), and he led the league in wins, ERA, strikeouts, and winning percentage (his record was 20-4).

He continued to produce at a prolific rate before leaving for the U.S. and signing with MLB’s Baltimore Orioles in 2009. Where he really made his mark though, was in Boston. In 2013, he had one of the most dominant seasons by a relief pitcher ever – recording 0.74 WHIP – and was an essential piece of the Red Sox’s World Series championship team, earning MVP honors in the American League Championship Series (for more on that historic season, check out this article on the best MLB seasons by Japanese pitchers). Uehara returned to NPB’s Giants in 2018 and retired in 2019 as an all-time great on both sides of the Pacific.

Uehara’s NPB career highlights:

  • 9× All-Star (1999–2005, 2007, 2018)
  • 2× Japan Series champion (2000, 2002)
  • 2× Eiji Sawamura Award (1999, 2002)
  • Pitching’s Triple Crown (1999)
  • Central League Rookie of the Year (1999)
  • 2× Golden Glove (1999, 2003)
  • 2× Best Nine Award (1999, 2002)
  • 2× NPB wins leader (1999, 2002)
  • 2× NPB ERA leader (1999, 2004)
  • 2× NPB strikeout leader (1999, 2003)

Uehara’s MLB career highlights:

  • All-Star (2014)
  • World Series champion (2013)
  • ALCS MVP (2013)
  • All-time leader in strikeout-to-walk ratio among qualifying relievers (7.33)
