Golden Week has come to an end, but since the last “holiday” was on a Sunday, the nation takes Monday off and will get treated to a day of baseball. Here are some of the main highlights from the past seven days of exciting NPB action!
Monday: All-world outfielder Yuki Yanagita of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks hit a walk-off three-run home run against the Saitama Seibu Lions, helping his team triumph 5-4 at the newly renamed Mizuho PayPay Dome. This was the third straight walk-off win over the long weekend for the Hawks. On the other side of the country, first-year import pitcher Miguel Yajure of the Tokyo Yakult Swallows threw a complete-game shutout a la Greg Maddux (just 94 pitches) to lead his Swallows to a 9-0 victory at Tokyo Dome over the Yomiuri Giants. Yajure allowed just three hits, walked no one, and struck out five.
Tuesday: Pitching excellence was at its best on this day. Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters lefty Sachiya Yamasaki threw a complete game one-run game against the Lions (a 2-1 victory), as did defending Central League MVP Shoki Murakami of the Hanshin Tigers, as the 2023 champs beat the Hiroshima Carp by a 7-1 score. There were also outstanding performances in other parks, as Roki Sasaki (7 IP 0 R 10 K) of the Chiba Lotte Marines got one run of support against Hiroya Miyagi (8 IP 1 R 13 K) of the Orix Buffaloes to pick up his third victory of the year. Also, Kohei Arihara threw seven shutout innings as his Hawks thrashed the Rakuten Eagles 8-0.
Wednesday: All three Pacific League games were determined in the final inning. Roberto Osuna of the Hawks gave up the game-deciding run in the ninth against the Eagles, Yoshihisa Hirano of the Buffaloes allowed five (unearned) runs to the Marines in the ninth, and Fighters’ reliever Yukiya Saitoh gave up a walk-off two-run home run to Gakuto Wakabayashi of the Lions.
Friday: Three more shutouts highlighted this day: Rookie lefty Natsuki Takeuchi and the Lions blanked the Hawks 1-0, Katsuki Azuma and the Baystars shut out the Carp 2-0, and Kenya Suzuki and the Fighters kept the Buffaloes off the scoreboard, winning 3-0 at Kyocera Dome. On offense, Swallows’ outfielder Yasutaka Shiomi hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eleventh inning as his birds defeated the Chunichi Dragons 5-3 at Jingu Stadium.
Saturday: After a long stretch of losing tight games, the Lions seem to have turned the corner, walking off their second game of the week. This time, it was Shuta Tonosaki singling home the winning run off Hawks’ reliever Yuki Tsumori for a thrilling 5-4 win. In the same league, southpaw CC Mercedes dropped his ERA to 0.62 and although he did not factor into the decision, his Marines triumphed over the Eagles 2-0.
Sunday: The Fighters kept their surprising start to the season going, posting four runs in the eighth inning against the Buffaloes and winning by a 6-3 score. They were helped by two stolen bases, a squeeze play, a fielding error by the Buffaloes, and a triple over a drawn-in outfield. They find themselves in second place in the PL, sporting a respectable 16-11-1 record.
Good Week: Swallows (4-1-1), Fighters (4-2), Baystars (4-2)
Rough Week: Buffaloes (1-5), Carp (1-3-1), Giants (2-4)
